Himself and Giles came back from England in 77 and went about trying to set up an academy with Rovers that could compete with English and European clubs.To be fair, they were left dealing with parish pump type wnkers who run the game over here and they packed it in at the end of the season.
Dunphy slinked off into journalism,and when Jack Charlton came along Dunphy made his name simply be picking on the cruder aspects of Charltonīs game plan. As for Giles, he was always a critic but usually articulate.
However maybe Dermot or Dubtone can confirm this. Itīs something that NEVER gets talked about but an older work colleague assures me it happened.
Apparently in an important world cup game (might have been France) Giles gave a short back pass and the opposition nipped in and scored. Ireland lost the game and failed to qualify, mainly due to this. Can anybody shed any light?
