Posted by Mark on 9/23/2006, 9:47 am, in reply to "Re: OUR WATERWAYS!!" Phillip was becoming a nuisance and you may be right in that he had an agenda. At the end I would only read the first few lines and forget the rest as it was all the same repeated stuff. I thought that his justification for filling in docks by an analogy to filling in a dock 100 years ago to build the Liver Buildings was odd. In those days the docks were fully active and still being expanded. Today half of the docks are redundant and supposed to be scheduled for domestic and leisure purposes with about half of these docks with no commercial usage having been filled in. I can't see the analogy to support his claim. The times and situations are worlds apart. The Three Graces did create a dead space in front of them at the Pier Head, and it was obvious and I never realised this until reading this forum. This interweb is a good thing then. This lessens the impact and importance of these three large buildings. The Pier Head has always been underused and not been a social space in any way and many attempts failed to make the space useful. It has always been a bus terminal never a city square like you see in Italy. Liverpool does not have a city square. The canal link may change that with having small boats moving in front of them. If the canal link is a failure it is difficult to rectify and we will be stuck with a continuing dead space at the Pier Head for many years to come. If Georges Dock was not filled in 100 years ago and the Three Graces built in front of the dock, would it have been a better use of the space? It would have been more animated with boats in front and the Liverpool marina would be at the Pier Head not Coburg Dock. It would be nice to see a drawing of how that would have looked. Would digging out a marina in front of the Three Graces with the canal running through it be better? I think it might. Digging a marina out should be easy as that is all reclaimed land around there. There you are you all have me wondering now. Maybe I am a closet planner.
