Posted by John on 10/20/2006, 11:24 am, in reply to "Appeal" Terry, No news yet, however don't be surprised if one comes in. The city of Liverpool is one of the few cities where ocean/sea going ships can berth in the centre at the Pier Head, Albert and Salthouse Docks. This was the case at Princes, Princes Half-Tide and West Waterloo - but British Waterways/MDHC decided to infill these dock to canal boat depths eliminating deep water berthing near the centre. Visiting ships: naval, the tall ship and historic ships like SS Manxman and WW2 Battle of the Atlantic ship HMS Wimbrel, etc. Brituish Watwerways do noy understand the nature of deep water Liverpool trying to create a glorified inland narrowboat canal. Thats is what they do - look after canal inland. That is their mentality. The South End and Central Docks must be run as one. There are three owners. British Waterways are incompetent and should go. A dedicated dock development and maintenance body is needed. The Bar Lightship can't even berth at Canning Dock as it is not dredged deep enough.

: Does anyone know if an appeal been submitted
: about the filling in of West Waterloo Dock?
There are major issues.
- Excavating the Trafalgar Dock and making all docks back from Trafalgar back to Princes deep water.
- A dredger or two can start at Salisbury Dock and work its way through - no mess to the locals as the water prevents dust. The fill can be dumped into the Irish Sea. (or make an an island in the river off John Lennon Airport for a new runway that only overflys water and can be used 24/7.
- Make sure the south docks are dredged properly.
- Open up the wide Brunswick river lock to allow wide ocean going vessels into the South End Docks - the Canning locks are narrow. Imagine the Ark Royal on a visit, or many other largish foreign naval ships.
This is a minimum to retain usable water spaces - preferably Victoria Dock is excavated too, then developing the docks properly can begin, and that should include excavating Toxteth and Harrington Docks in new developments.
