A new guidance document is being released. This guides developers in the World Heritage Site - required by UNESCO. This document is 5 years too late! Better than nothing though. In this 5 years docks have been filled in to canal boat depths precluding deep water vessels reducing the docks to inland canal barge ways.
Peel wanted to build in the water itself of Princes Half-Tide Dock, but was told by Liverpool City Council and the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment to forget it. The supplementary planning document ruled out losing any more water spaces – Pier Head was itself built on a reclaimed dock. This sounds encouraging, no filling of water spaces.
Peel's Liverpool Waters Plans had West Waterloo Dock filled in. Are they also saying the docks must be kept deep catering for deep water vessels and not inland canal barges? I doubt it. It would be nice if they said the docks in the World Heritage Site must cater for deep water vessels.
Myopic planning has reduced deep water berthing at Liverpool and Birkenhead. Money could be made in Birkenhead berthing laid up ships because of the recession.
