What is Straight Up AmeriCorps?
Straight Up AmeriCorps is a nonprofit organization which works to meet the educational needs of Humboldt County’s K-12th grade children and youth. Straight Up AmeriCorps volunteers are placed in local schools and community centers in order to provide one-on-one mentoring to students, lead after school programs and create opportunities for children and youth to become more connected to school and the community in order to increase school success.
This depends a bit on what it is that you would like to do and where you would like to work. We have placement programs in elementary, middle and high schools throughout Humboldt County. Each of these sites has a full time AmeriCorps member who is working there who you would be teamed up with in order to provide more individualized attention to the youth you are working with. Examples of some of the activities you might be engaged in could be tutoring, working on arts and crafts or even leading sports, activities and games.
In addition to the great feeling of making a difference you will also gain valuable training and experience working with youth. If you are interested in a career in education or social work this is a fantastic experience builder and looks great on a resume. Your volunteer time with AmeriCorps can also count as credit for some classes and programs. But most importantly it’s an opportunity to give back to the community in a way that’s fun and rewarding.
No. However, AmeriCorps does have another member program which offers a living stipend and an educational grant. If you are able to make a full time commitment (20- 40 hours per week) and would be interested in applying for this program instead then definitely let us know so that we can give you more information, or contact Debby Hart at 707-269-2023 or support@rcaa.org.
Volunteers are asked to make a commitment of two or more hours a week for at least one semester. You will be asked to complete an initial placement interview and to attend a 2 hour training session. Finally, some sites will require a TB test and background check.
Let us know that you’re interested. We would love to set up a time to meet you and find out a bit more about you and how you’re interested in volunteering. Give us a call or respond to this email telling us a little bit about yourself and why you’d like to work with AmeriCorps. Let us know what your schedule looks like as well as any other preferences you have about where you’d like to work.
