I’m helping a Sacramento family attempt to locate a lady that today, if still alive would be in her later 80’s if not early 90’s. Probably born around 1920. The entire family history centers around Eureka, Fortuna and the family names are Durham, Archer, Kindred, to name a few. Our clients mother, Carole passed away in 2005 and she was the last person to have actually “played” on the ranch of Aunt Grace. Unfortunately, when talking to her children about Aunt Grace, Carole never mentioned a last name. And that is where we are today, attempting to run down Aunt Grace with no last name.
Here is some of her story, perhaps it will ring a bell.
She would have lived, or still lives, most if not all of her life on the family ranch outside of Eureka/Fortuna and is described as somewhat of a “hermit” meaning that she probably did not socialize much. Today, if she is still with us and if she were still on the ranch, she would have a care-giver and a couple of ranch hands. The ranch has a two story home and a smaller cottage as well as a barn on it. Carole described the ranch location as “just outside of Fortuna”.
Supposedly she would be more on the “well off” side of wealth, meaning that perhaps she or her family were more prominent ranchers or business people in the greater Fortuna area.
While her nieces and nephews may have known her as “Aunt Grace”, it certainly does not mean that the community also knew her as “Grace”.
She was married in the late 40’s and 50’s and her husband passed away from the complications of a stroke in the 1950’s.
