The Humboldt County Youth Driving Coalition and the Fortuna Police Department present Drive Safe- Drive Smart: A free event for teens and their parents at the downtown Fire Station (320 South Fortuna Blvd) in Fortuna on Thursday September 22 from 5:30-7:30 PM. Traffic collisions are the number one cause of injury and death for teenagers in Humboldt County, and the Coalition works with communities to put an end to these preventable tragedies. Local experts will share critical information and tips to increase awareness about the dangers teens face in cars and how car crashes can be prevented. Local businesses have come together to provide free pizza for the event. Prizes will also be given away throughout the evening. Both junior high and high school students and their parents are warmly welcomed. The event will be conducted in Spanish.
A panel of local experts will address specific topics including: how and where collisions occur, safe driving tips, common driving mistakes, dynamics of a collision, how to get a driver’s license, and California’s provisional license restrictions. Local experts include representatives from the California Highway Patrol, Fortuna Police Department and the DMV, among others. Participants will also be able to view a “Jaws of Life” demonstration.
The Humboldt County Youth Driving Safety Program is part of the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services Public Health Branch. The program is funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
