Texas State Championship Drag Race Postponed
Austin, TX, August 16, 2012 -- Texas Timing Association CEO Ed Miller has announced that the 2012 Texas State Championship drag race, originally scheduled for October 27, 2012, has been postponed. The event, slated for San Antonio (Texas) Raceway, will next be held in October 2013.
"In attempting to build on the success of the 2009, 2010 and 2011 Texas State Championship races, we recognized the need to take the event to an even more professional level, for the benefit of both our fans and the participants" said Miller.
The popular race was first held in 1952 at legendary Caddo Mills Drag Strip, and was run for many years thereafter before eventually going on hiatus later in the 20th century. The Texas Timing Assn. reinstated the event in 2009, and continued it during 2010 and 2011.
"To test a number of new marketing programs and an expansion of existing programs, we decided to organize a second, similar event, Texas Nitro Nostalgia, this past May."
Unfortunately, that event was hit with unseasonable heat -- temperatures inside enclosed trailers exceeded 115 degrees. In addition, the only date available was on the Cinco de Mayo holiday weekend. The two factors combined to reduce attendance significantly.
"While we were able to prove several new marketing initiatives which would have benefited a 2012 Texas State Championship, the May race underscored the need to find more complete event sponsorship," said Miller. "Our Texas State Championship races -- for Top Fuel, Fuel Funny Cars, Nostalgia Junior Fuel, Blown Fuel, Fuel Altereds, and Gassers -- should more properly reward the contestants and those who have brought historic cars to participate in our wildly popular Cacklefests."
"We've had a lot of interest from potential event sponsors," Miller added, "but getting the deals done in time to allow proper promotion for October 2012 ultimately proved too challenging. As a result, in order to make the next Texas State Championship all that it can be, we're taking advantage of the additional time available by moving the date for the next event to October 2013."
