1970 U. S. Nationals
48 years ago this weekend (1970), Raymond Austin with driver Marshal Love, Headed to INDY to compete in the “Big Go”. With over 55 entries only the top 32 Top Fuel Dragsters would make the field. Raymond’s 232 inch T/F car, won 1st rd with 6.55 @ 232.55, which was Top MPH for the day! Won 2nd rd over Kansas John Wiebe with 6.70 then Lost in the 3rd rd to Jim Nichol 6.59 to 6.62. You can see all the old action on NHRA all access. ( we all know how this one ends; Prudhome beats Nichol; Jim‘s clutch explodes cutting his car in half).
OR Fast Forward and:
Come to Ardmore Oklahoma this Saturday evening and see Outlaw Fuel Altered Association (OFAA) and a full field of Nitro Burning Fuel Altereds. Raymond Austin’s “Magic Dragon” AA/FA with driver Mark Billington ( Red Hot after their win against the Pro Mods at Northstar in Denton,Tx) along with 15 of the fastest Altereds in the country will be there. With only 4 events to go, every point earned is important with the 2018 Champion to be determined in just 6 weeks.
Although the Dragon ran two 3.80’s @ Northstar, I’m hoping they will be BushWhacked in the final!
Sincerely, Jody
