I just got hold of an article describing a study of the effectiveness of flex sigs in women. Seems that while they pick up quite a few polyps and cancers in men, they miss a lot in women--maybe up to 65%. The link is below. So--if your general practitioner is urging a flex sig (cheaper, no sedation needed, although I would disagree heartily on that one! My doc was either incompentent, sadistic, or just plain misogynistic, but whatever the situation, it hurt like hell!)--just say no! Insurance companies love flex sigs because they can be done in the office, and make a lot of money for those involved, but 1) I'm pretty sure not one of those insurance types has ever had a flex sig, and 2) flex sigs give a false sense of security, while a colonoscopy will examine the whole colon. After having both, the choice seems obvious to me.
