Posted by Clem My mother had outpatient surgery for a blocked tear duct yesterday. She was scheduled for MAC anesthesia, and it was stated point-blank to her before surgery (I was in the room) that she would be asleep during the procedure. Well, guess what? When she got back, she told me that she had been awake for almost the whole thing. Heard them talking, felt pulling, tugging, heard bone crunching, felt every suture, etc. Not pain, but she described it as being in a prolonged dental procedure, uncomfortable, and counting off the seconds until it was done. I am furious. As far as I am concerned, she was lied to, plain and simple. And people of that generation (almost 80) don't question the docs--I think she probably could have said something but just toughed it out. Jeez. I really want to throttle that doc for being such a heartless, inconsiderate jerk. Tell you what, I am having bilateral bunion surgery next week, and I'm having general anesthesia! And I'm probably driving my doctors nuts asking questions, but hey, I don't want any surprises. I learned my lesson on the flex sig and colonoscopy, thank you very much.

You'll have to excuse a bit of a rant here. We've talked many times about talking to the physician before the colonoscopy, but we should remember that this same idea holds for all physicians and procedures.
