Blaming it on the sedative that doesn't work on 2 to 3 % of patients was no excuse--he was just trying to make you responsible for his screw up. It's his job to get you sedated. Your advice to others about getting info about the doctor BEFORE the procedure is excellent--meet the person in their office days or weeks before the procedure. Many of them will balk at this and say they don't meet you until you arrive at the place you're having the colonoscopy. Beware! Docs who do lots of these procedures aren't afraid to meet with patients ahead of time. The incompetent jerks are. I had a similar experience to yours, and I've cautioned everyone I know how to avoid bad experiences. I'm determined that no one I know will ever go through what I did. I understand about not sleeping at night. It takes awhile to process the trauma. I found it helped when I contacted my regular doctor (who insisted I get a colonscopy as part of an "old lady" screening). She was appalled at my treatment and said she would be making a couple of phone calls also. I hope your polyp news is good; you endured a terrible experience. The one good part is finding that polyp and getting rid of it. Take some time to pamper yourself and recover from this.

I am so sorry that you had this experience. Your doctor was both incompetent and inhumane. Keep up the pressure on your formal grievance and don't let this guy get by. I'm sure you're not the first patient he has abused.
