There is a reason this rule exists. I am a living example of it. I have been catching for years. Several years back, I was attempting to receive a throw to the plate. The runner decided to run me over. Result... a broken collar bone, end of season and three weeks out of work. This is not professional ball. We all have jobs, families and responsibilities to take care of. The members of this league play to have fun. Now that said, I have played in 4 different leagues as well as the World Series. In all these leagues, if a catcher illegally blocked the plate, the runner is given the base and the catcher warned. A second instance and the catcher could be ejected from the game.
