saving and spending and the auto economy

Something to think about, given the notion of savings.... the system itself demands that we spend. At xmas time, for instance, the economy would collapse if we would follow Christian ethic that looks at non-material meaning to the holiday. Everything in the system tells us to spend. Certainly Ford and the auto companies would not have survived without the new ethic of desire over frugality. Is is wrong to blame people who are guided by the new values of this economic system?
