African American women had a hard time after the war because they were the first to be laid off not only because they were black but also because they were women, making it twice as likely for them to be fired. Those next in line to lose their jobs were African American men. They had families depending on them financially. If their women were unable to hold jobs as well as the husbands now, how were they expected to survive? How could they ensure a comfortable life? There's an easy answer, they couldn't. It was made sure of that. Jobs that were available after service men came back after the war went to white women, leaving next to nothing for others.
