I was just very surprised after reading this excerpt that it was published way back in 1962. It almost seems like it was published more recently. I can't believe these ideas about the poor were already taking shape back in the sixties. I know its no surprise to anyone that this "other america" still continues today, ot an even greater extent, but I just feel a little disturbed by it. I don't understand why a government would continue to allow people to be subjected to such misery, when they undoubtedlly have the resources and ability to prevent it.
