I found Martin Luther King Jr.'s speech very powerful and in a way surprising. There had been so much violence and abuse done to the African American people and they were ready to do something about it. However, even though they had been abused, both mentally and physically, they did not want to use violence as part of their action. They had no thought of "retaliation" to the whites; they only wanted to be treated as equal human beings. MLK states "And I want to say, that we are not here advocating violence. We have never done that. I want it to be known throughout Montgomery and throughout the nation that we are Christian people. We believe in the Christian religion. We believe in the teachings of Jesus. They only weapon we have in our hands this evening is the weapon of protest. That's all." I found this to be very interesting. Though I knew that MLK did not want to promote violence even through everything that had been done to them by the white people. It takes a lot of strength to stand up in front of your people and tell them we do not want to retaliate against these people.. we just want our rights and that's all. I definitely respect MLK very much for that.
