I think that many people are in the military today because they want to pay for school when they get out of it. Also when it comes to the discussion about educated people, I think its much more common for people to go to college today than it was in the past so i don't think that is a very fair comparision. I've met a lot of people who have come out of the forces who were very smart but not necessarily well educated so you can't measure based on that. Its sort of like standarized testing, some people are very smart but don't test well. Some people are very smart but don't do well in school. Its unfair to say that someone who isn't educated isn't smart.
