Just like every other country, we act in our own best interests at the present time. Back then, helping Afghanistan was in our best interests. Now overthrowing the Iraq government is, or at least is considered to be. The matter of extremists killing civilians and us, that has to do with beliefs really. Obviously if you disagree with a teacher, you won't kill that teacher. But then again, you don't believe thats the right bay to go about things. There are cases where kids have killed their teacher over a disagreement because they believe that's the only way to solve the problem. Same goes for the extremists in Iraq, they believe that killing soldiers and civilians will diminish our commitment to helping rebuild and force us out. They see violence as the solution, hence why they are using it
