I think that in order to understand the Iran situation one has to look at the United States' ally in the Middle East, Israel. Israel is the only nation in the Middle East right now that has nuclear weapons. The fear that America has of Iran gaining nuclear weapons is that “it could lead to a nuclear arms race in the Middle East that could be quite destabilizing, given the number of conflicts and instabilities in the region” (Nuclear Weapons 1). Iran wants nuclear weapons because of the fact that Israel already has them, and that the United States is not treating Israel to the same degree as it is the other nations of the Middle East (Cirincione 1). If Israel were to disarm itself of nuclear weapons, it could put pressure on the regime of Iran to stop its nuclear program, and if Iran did not disarm, it could show the international community how big of a threat Iran regime truly is (Cirincione 1).
