Belvedere Plantation, offers a homeschool day on the farm. We would like to invite your group to join us. If you have any questions please feel free to contact me at any time.
Students will have the opportunity to work together in small groups to solve Belvedere's world-class maze. This field trip teaches children the science of farming: learning about the many uses of corn agronomy, uses of corn in our diet and the history of mazes. An orientation of teamwork starts in the maze, while children learn about map reading, perseverance, problem solving, decision-making, math, English, geography and art. Solving the maize maze is done in small groups designed to promote team problem solving skills. An edible treat for each class, fun time on the 100 foot long Pumpkin Mountain Slide, and a teacher's maze packet is also included.
Explore a new team building experience with your school students, corporate/company personal, professional organizations, and church groups or athletic teams. Create a custom team building experience to meet the needs of your group. Pick the topics that reinforce the needs of your group. Through fun group participation enjoy a day in the country and integrate activities such as: leadership, trust, communication and motivation. Each group is given the opportunity to recap their day with a wrap up discussion.
Start the day with a welcome orientation of the farm. Take a hayride to the pumpkin patch to pick your specimen for the science lab. (Each person takes his or her unharmed pumpkin home after using it for the lab). The lab, led by Belvedere Staff, and the participation of parents and teachers, involves a number of grade appropriate observation and data collection exercises. Science and math topics are emphasized in the lab. Labs are adjusted to grade level. A visit to the observation honeybee station follows the lab. Visiting the farm animals at the Old Barnyard is optional after lunchtime. Edible treats are offered to all classes. If time permits, we encourage the children to play on the Pumpkin Mountain Slide.
The staff of Belvedere will help children to learn and understand the farm's role in food production during the fall pumpkin season. Welcoming you to the farm, and sharing some of Belvedere's history with you, Belvedere's staff will explain how you will enjoy a series of learning stations and activities during your visit. Trained staff farmers lead each station, so that no question will go unanswered. Learning stations include a hayride to the pumpkin patch were each person picks a pumpkin to take home. (Teachers please pick a pumpkin to take back to your classrooms.) Other learning stations include: The pumpkin life cycle station, covering plant growth requirements and pollination. Interactions between insects and plants and bee social structure will be introduced at the observation honeybee hive. Fun facts about farm animals will be introduced at the Old Barnyard. Picnic and play areas are available if time permits. A coloring poster for each child and edible treat to take back to class rounds out this farm field trip.

Have payment ready on arrival to speed check-in and save your group considerable time! Bring self adhesive name labels for each child's pumpkin. If you opt not to bring labels, please bring several markers per classroom to label the pumpkins. Pumpkin bags are provided. Bring adequate chaperones to manage your group, one adult per 5 or 6 children is recommended. Maze field trips require 1 chaperone per every 5 to 8 children.
The farm can be a difficult place for those suffering from asthma, severe inhalant allergies, or allergic reactions to bee stings. Please note that perfumes and fragrances tend to attract bees. Honeybees are bred to be very gentle and will only sting to defend themselves or the colony. Wild Wasps and Yellow Jackets account for almost all bee stings on the farm. If a honeybee lands on you, simply blow it off, do not hit or swat it.
Picnic area provided for your lunch or snack. Lunch concessions are available during October field trips. Group lunch orders should be placed at least two days in advance. Please call for pricing and ordering.
With kind regards,
Colleen D. Hairston
