Posted by Rick Wright on 1/16/2006, 3:24 pm We are looking into two available weekends in April, the 28th-30th being the primary date with the 7th-9th being the back up. The added incentive for the 28-30 weekend is that the Ft. Frederick Trade Fair, the largest and best period fair east of the Mississippi opens on Thursday. the 27th and runs through Sunday afternoon the 30th. Big Pool, MD. and the fort are about 45 min. via the turnpike and interstates from Bedford. Please note that this event is to be done under field conditions. There will be two separate campsites; about 1 mi. apart. Neither is easily located. Both sites have wood and water nearby, but foraging for it is part of the tactical program. Close access by vehicle for gear is available but carry in will be necessary during setup. Ken will have his quad runner and wagon there to help. Correct period rations will be available for those British/Allied forces who wish to produce a proper mess. You have ample room to set up tentage, but you can also camp "in the field". i.e. under the stars. Both hay for horses and straw for bedding can be supplied. Both sites have space for long picket lines. This is the Brigade's first attempt at an event like this and we need numbers on both sides to succeed. We are sure the cavalry and infantry of the Brigade will make an all out effort for the program as well as our Canadians brethren and all those who were with us during the Grand Tactical at Old Bedford Village last June.

The Brigade is putting together a campaign style event at the Darrow Bison Ranch in Schellsburg, PA., the location of the School of the Soldier last September. The Ranch is 1400 acres of rolling woodland and pastures with dirt roads, trails, streams and little modern intrusions. It is the best cavalry and light infantry ground we have seen in 15 yrs. plus of reenacting, and includes ample terrain for all tactical situations. Combined arms, cavalry, line, and light, anything we could have ever wished to do can be done here. The site is near Old Bedford Village - 14 mi. west of the Bedford exit on US 30, just 2 mi. west of Schellsburg, PA. This is private property owned by fellow reenactors who do French and Indian War when they are not knee deep in running the ranch, 350 head of bison and 150 head of beef cattle. The basic rule with them is have fun and close the gate when you leave the field. They are excellent hosts.
The plan for the event would be set up on Friday, a tactical all day on Saturday, and then pull out as desired on Sunday, especially for those who want to make the fair. The Saturday tactical would start at daylight and run till sunset, with the possibility of continuing on into the evening, or Sunday for those who wish. The program will end no later then 10:00 am on Sunday. Each side would have objectives to fulfill oriented to scouting, foraging, and bringing the enemy to battle, etc. Casualties would be assessed according to a kill/wound system which has the soldier/trooper sit out a specific time depending on the injury inflicted. Ken Hall has had a rules scheme in place for an event like this since his time as a Ranger 20 years ago. Details on the scoring, objectives, rules of engagement and causalities tables will all be sent out to the approximate command structures once a unit has committed to the event. Thus the British/Allied side will not know the French objectives and vice versa. All will have a common set of scoring and rules.
