hi craig...i'm also thinking of making one.my guess it has a leather base and a solid top with flamme sewn on shell before fur is applied.i have some 4 oz leather i'm going to experiment with. what do you think of making a plume with feather boa wrapped around flexible plastic garden stake...i'm trying it out now and it looks presentable...then there are chin scales and cords.without any basis for assumption i guess a stovepipe shako might make a good base for colpak(minus brim)...let me know how it goes
