i've read the same books.i think the most telling assessment is from the records of supply depots that show almost no bayonets were issued and those that were were used to dig potatoes or ditches and almost no illustations show anyone wearing one and no holders are depicted.i think the previous reply to your note says volumes...the brits on the other hand never went anywhere without a pokey thing on the end of a stick.
