Ok. Looks like we have one going. Good to hear from the old Gordons. Will I have a little exsert here from "French Revolutionary Infantry 1791-1802.Thomas Lowres, editor. This is rated "R" for violence. Battle of Anderlecht,Nov.13,1792."There was only time to drop our eating tools and off against the enemy with empty stomachs. We load our weapons:'en avant, pas de charge'.The ground trembled beneath our feet by the Austrian cannonade! 'En avant NAVARRE, without fear!' At the old regimental battle cry, we yell 'a la baionette'. The musketry against us was as hail all about.Fortunately, the only damage done to my outfit, which was completely plastered with the brains of an officer, not candle wax,(private joke),who was killed in front of me. The Austrians greeted us with a renewed rolling fire.Too bad;up the hill we went at pas de charge. Supported by the marvellous Bercheny Hussars,we got right amongst who resisted, pushing them back with the bayonet.Fired up by the music and drums,French soldats closed with the enemy in hand-to-hand combat! We took the redoudt with the bayonet. An emigre seized hold of me when then my comrades came up as we were grappling. He could not take my gun from me and he fled.We ran after him and just as he was jumping a hedge I shoved my bayonet into him.I killed him and took his boots and purse. I also was almost killed. Two emigres fell on me,but I did not lose my head.I thrust my bayonet into the stomach of one and one of my comrades cut the head off of the other. I received a sabre cut from an Austrian corporal almost taking off two fingers on my left hand but he was cut down by our grenadiers. After the battle the priority was food.Being drunk on victory did not compensate the hunger in our bellies for long. And so,it goes on just what to do with these these bayonets. Sincerement, Gran Pair,Sgt.Maj.3eme
