Gentlemen,
The Cavalry of the Reserve and Brigade Naopleon Staff are working on plans for a School of the Soldier/Trooper to be held in the field the weekend of Sept 23-25 on the site for next years campaign event. I have checked with our hosts, Richard and Anne Darrow of the Darrow Bison Ranch, and they have no problem with our new date instead of the 1st weekend in Oct. as was originally scheduled. The ranch is located on US 30 in Schellsburg, PA., about 7 mi. west of Old Bedford Village. Bison Corral's website is www.bedfordcounty.net/attract/bison/.
Setup will be on Friday the 23rd. You can choose to tent or do a true campaign event and sleep out in the field. Although the campsite is accessible by vehicle, you will need to keep your gear to a minimum. Rmemeber, you are supposed to be living out of your pack/valise and haversack. The site has a pond for watering horses, trees for shelter and an outhouse. There is no potable water on site, but it is available on the farm about a half mile from the grounds, which is also where the cars will be parked. Please be prepared with plenty of water for both drinking and cooking.
Saturday and Sunday we will have program activities for both infantry and cavalry. The infantry can work on individual and unit skills (can you fire 3 rounds per minute?) and also will have sessions on tuning the musket, proper foot wear and leatherwork in the field. There is ample room in the area for a 3 mile route march. For the cavalry there will be a chance to work both light and heavy tactics, the sabre course and time to scout the terrain. Additionally the cavalry will have a chance to learn proper picket line protocol, how to pack the valise and again leatherwork in the field. As always, we will have the chance to share our camaraderie and love of this fascinating era.
Food preparation will be on your own or in a unit mess. But again, the more you prepare the more you have to clean up. So keep it simple. Fire wood will be collected by fatigue details so you or the unit will need to bring an axe. The program will end early Sunday afternoon and those with long trips home will be able to get out on time. This event is on private property and there will be no public.
Further details including schedule, specific directions to the site and what you need to bring will follow shortly. Please email me with you intentions as to attendance and numbers. Although we have started late on this program, the cavalry already has more then a dozen riders committed to attending with more possible. So let's build on what we accomplished at the Grand and make this a successful event also.
Therefore I remain.....

PS Reminder - This is the Pennsylvania mountains in late September. Do not expect the days to be 92 degrees and prepare for the possibility of cool nights.
