Ah very interesting gents. It seems a shame, but i guess the economics have to add up! It interests me that some venues (birmingham i think) start mid Dec and run til Feb, whereas others choose to close by 2nd/3rd Jan. Does it not feel a bit strange to still be doing a panto in Feb? Best wishes.

: You are correct, as usual, Nigel; was only
: talking to a major venue booker about this
: subject some weeks ago. Schools now break up
: around the 19th/20th December so theatres
: try to book school parties before schools
: finish for the Christmas break; then rely on
: families during the seasonal break.
: Although some venues run shows after schools
: return, everything depends on the booking
: history of the catchment area. Was a
: facinating conversation!

: The main effect I believe is the short
: school
: holidays that we have now- schools break up
: much later than they used to, and often go
: back almost as soon as New Year's Day is
: over. That can lead to shorter panto runs-
: some opt to start earlier and rely on school
: parties before term ends, others hope to
: gain school parties after New Year, but most
: runs are finishing earlier as a result.

: Has anyone noticed the average panto run
: seems
: to be getting shorter this year? Cambridge,
: Bromley, Wimbledon all seem to have lost a
: week... Credit Crunch finally affecting live
: theatre?
