I am a real traditionalist. I love the female boy and the male dame. Isn't that what it's all about. I have always had female boys in my pantos. The only two I can think of where a male would maybe be better ar Beauty and the beast (beautiful legs and a beastly head don't seem to go together) and Snow White because the prince has to kiss her. In most of the other pantos they profess their love for one another but never actually kiss.

: I certainly wasn't 'bemoaning' anything. I was
: just interested as to why the 'tradition' of
: the female principal boy was dying out. So
: when we will see a panto dame played by a
: woman? I personally don't think that panto
: is about a 'love interest 'in particular,
: that only make ups a tiny percentage of what
: is involved in a panto. Its about jokes,
: having fun, making people laugh etc....
: If it's eye candy people are after then they
: are at the wrong show!

: Men played principle boy even in Victorian
: times. It's seems pointless bemoaning these
: changes. The whole reason panto is still
: here is that it changes to reflect the
: times. Why shouldn't mums have a bit of eye
: candy as well as the dads. It also makes the
: love story element much stronger.

: I am interested to see other people's views
: on
: the growing trend of men playing the
: principal boy part in a number of
: professional panto's. I think its such a
: shame that the tradition of the leggy
: principal girl is dying out.
: Is there any particular reason to this?
: I understand that panto as we knew it years
: ago is changing and I'm all for growth,
: change and modernisation but surely one
: fundamental part of panto is the traditional
: princiapl boy played by a leggy lass in fish
: nets! Why does it have to change?
