A Tristan convertible, is a kit that was produced to convert saloon heralds into convertibles. The kit is not produced anymore, but there are still some about fitted to cars. As far as I am aware these kits are perfectly safe, infact they probably offer better protection than the original convertable structure (they have a t-piece which fits to the windscreen and the door points).
