I have red 7-8 year old female in my large back yard that spends the day by herself until my 11 year old daughter and I get home in the eves. My neighbors are very tollerant of her barking and I am recently "considering" a companian for her since she has been a pretty maitenance free heathly dog. I adopted her at age 3. I would like to know more about your situation.
