Why not bring that version of Simon into the present day? Have him supplant present day Simon (making it clear its temporary 'cause that would be novel) and just have a character arc where Hollywood (for lack of a better differentiating name) changes one big thing that he knows will affect the future and then guessing from there what is needed to follow that domino...
