The differences in price of the (cheap) stepper system compared to the (more expensive)servo system is a consideration for many who can't or won't shell out the added revenue. I've seen where the high end scopes tend to use servo systems. Is there benefits to using servos over steppers and does the differences warrent the extra cost?
: Hi Antonio,
: I have yet to find servicable servos that are
: cheaper to buy than steppers. Mel's system
: can conrol servo motors too.
: Belts can be used on Mel's system if you
: wish, but PE can be compensated for via
: the software if need be.
: BTW, for visual use, the way most users have
: geared their scopes, PE is typically only
: visible via ccd camera or on film. In
: order to see it visually, it requires a
: couple of barlows and a high power
: eyepiece, spoiling the view of the object
: in question anyway.

: Hi! I've read somewhere that servo motors
: would
: be much better than stepper motors for
: astronomical mounts, because of the very
: philosophy by which they are built: : instead
: of advancing in discrete steps
: (making it very costly to reduce
: step-size), they advance at a continuous
: rate (which is supposedly cheaper to do
: slowly). Furthermore, I guess in the same
: article, I'm sure I've read that if you
: use a pulley and belt system in place of
: the standard worm gear system (i.e. Harley
: Davidson motorcycle transmission vs BMW)
: you are almost sure of eliminating
: periodic error and all the other
: irregularities in your drive system.
: Has anybody else seen/heard anything like
: that?
: Thanks
: Antonio
