The field de-rotator is on a separate circuit from the Azimuth axis and turns at a different rate typically. It does chage rotation rate based on position of the optics IIRC.
Should you find a mechanical solution for your idea, the motor powered by the current PCB to turn it can likely be adapted to the mechanicals.
