Posted by Lenord Yes and yes. The az axis is just a flat rotating GoTo platform. You just plop your scope on top of it. The alt axis has a clutch, a very basic clutch, but a clutch. With expected slewing speeds in the neighborhood of 5 degrees per second, I personally don't think you will need them after the scope is initialized to the stars. I mostly hop from one constellation to another. Long slews are not the norm for me or most users of Mel's system. You can add encoders later if you like and keep the initialization. It is more expense and more wiring etc., but it is possible. Keep in mind that a full GoTo dob is a whole different beast compared to an encoder pointed dob or manual dob. Take Care
