The Liffey descent race is celebrating its 50th birthday this year and a number of club members are already making plans to go.
Despite being billed as a race the majority of the 1000 or so paddlers are not seriously racing but out to enjoy the challenge of the weirs and rapids with their excellent safety cover and the wonderful atmosphere. The largest class is for general purpose kayaks but another option would be to use the club’s plastic double tourer or the Topo Duo (plus Kerrian might have access to another plastic tourer).
Because of the expected large entry this year we are planning to get our entries in soon and if anyone wants to join us (and share cars etc) please let me know asap.
Some logistics:
17 miles with 10 big weirs and two sets of rapids (and a portage). Apart from a small section across a reservoir it is all moving water (and plenty of it because there is a dam release).
Travel out on Friday morning 4th Sept from Holyhead, race on Saturday, return on Sunday, should be home in time for tea.
The ferry, entry fee and 2 nights camping will cost about £130 per person (allow a bit more for B&B).
Entry forms need to be signed by a level 3 coach to say you are competent.
