For the historical record: To those folks that cannot see the Kuskokwim River at McGrath, ice is moving out tonight and unless some surprise awaits us, we can proclaim that breakup has occurred here, flood-free. The tripod moved and tripped the clock Friday at 4:56pm (haven't heard yet who the winner is), some ice broke off and moved down past the mouth of the Takotna, and ice moved at the south end of the runway, pushing up by the ball park. Today, Saturday, what appears to be the final run began in the early evening and at 11:30pm it continues heading downriver, crushed into small pieces - just the way we like to see it go.
The annual Mother's Day Pig roast doubled today as the break-up party as well - thanks Ben and all your helpers, and to all who shared that great McGrath home-cookin'. It was a really great potluck under mostly sunny skies, and the pig was done to perfection. Thanks to Carolyn Craig, Candace Waruch and other helpers for sharing health information with all of us - that was a nice touch. The roses are much appreciated too!
(Hopefully I will not wake up in the morning surrounded by water!!!)
