We are closely watching the levee on the Kuskokwim River at McGrath. It was damaged by flooding several years ago and continues to show signs of additional erosion.
NRCS (National Resource Conservation Service) has a project to stabilize the levee through a repair contract later this year. This project is only for stabilization and not reconstruction.
I am concerned about the possibility of a small breech in the levee causing a more serious one that could lead to a new channel. This would isolate the airfield and adjacent buildings from the housing further south. This would necessitate a major response operation including possible evacuation. We are working with the local government and are seeking frequent status updates. The ice is gone but the snowpack is still melting and could affect that area.
Since you have NWS people there, I want to ensure you know of this and to ask them to offer assistance to the local leadership.
