Posted by Steve Dean * How rampant is it? These questions aren't posed for the sake of just having a debate. I am curious as to what the wrestling brain-trust in the State of Michigan feels about the subject of weight-cutting and weight control at the youth level. It is okay to have differing views and thoughts on the matter. Let's just promise to be respectful of those disparate views when sharing our posted thoughts on the subject. Maybe it's a non-issue. In the end, let's do what is ultimately in the best interest of our youth wrestler's and the advancement of our beloved sport of wrestling. Regards, Steve

This is a topic that I'm sure will spark some lively debate - the topic of weight cutting at the youth level. A few questions that I have personally concerning this subject are:
* To what extent are kids cutting weight i.e. how many pounds?
* Is weight cutting at the youth level teaching valuable lessons for the high school experience?
* Does weight cutting at the youth level have a negative impact on those kids who ultimately elect to not wrestle in their high school years?
* Is there a better way to handle weigh-ins currently i.e. regionally? Call in (or e-mail in) weights to tournament hosts?
* What if weight classes were done away with? Meaning that basically you were paired or "blocked" within acceptable variance levels from heaviest to the lightest wrestler in a weight-group for any given tournament? This could be managed systematically.
* With regards to the above, who would have the bigger issue - the kids or the parents?
