Posted by Chris Collins There was a lot of discussion of weigh-in procedures at the MMWA Rules Committee Meeting on the 17th. That group passed a proposal that MMWA weigh-ins work as follows: A wrestler may step on the scales once, step off, remove undergarments if desired or switch to another scale at the site, and step on again. That weight determines the weight class, and if he is over for a particular class, then he wrestles the next weight up, or he doesn't wrestle at that tournment. His weigh-in slip is retained, and marked as 'Not Wrestling' for pairing when there are night before weigh-ins. The hope is that this will force people to step on and accept the weight. No running, no vomiting, etc. It still has to pass the membership at large next December to go into effect, but I'm going to be lobbying for it. The whole idea of youth wrestling is to teach wrestling, not weight cutting. Coaches need to stress a healthy balanced diet for everyone. It's certainly unhealthy for an 8 or 9 year old to be starving himself for 3 months during the year. Who knows what that does to bone, muscle, brain, etc. growth during that time. One other thing that always bothers me. Kids are weighing in at a tournament, and when a kid is 1 or 2 tenths over a weight, the man by the scales says "Do you want to go run a bit, or go to the bathroom?" It's almost a implicit instruction to go lose weight. Kids certainly pick up on those cues, and get the idea that they should be weighing less. Well, I guess I didn't actually comment on your porposals, Steve. I'll think about them specifically and let you know.

There were unsubstantiated reports of at least 1 8 yr. old at the MMWA Finals being "helped" by a parent to throw up to make weight. This was truly disturbing to hear.
