Posted by ed love on August 27, 2005, 4:34 pm, in reply to "A Manhunter article at Newsarama" two, dc didn't aquire the vast majority of the quality characters. most of the quality characters passed into public domain. this is why you see many reprints of them at ac comics with nary a comment as dc being owner. what dc bought in the 50's were the titles the company was producing at the time which included plastic man which promptly was cancelled, blackhawk and a host of various non-superhero titles (most superheroes were already gone). when dc introduced the freedom fighters it was because the writers thought dc did own them and it's not like there was much of anyone to complain. dc owns the trademark to manhunter, but they don't own the character. it's interesting that the dan richards manhunter stayed in continuous print longer than any of the others. like quality's dollman, it was strip that lived up to the company's name and proved to be popular enough to outlast most competition. and is sadly almost completely forgotten about today. and i love the unintentionally ironic part about a more beloved rocket red replacing the manhunter android one.

a few minor comments. one, they credit jeff rovin's superhero encyclopedia. while it's a very good book, it is also in need of an editor as there are quite a few factual errors in it. i've used it as a resource myself, but it's often a starting point, one should either verify the information and/or admit up front that the information may be flawed.
