Thanks for everyone's concerns. As Paul accurately noted in his e-mail, the Landis family got lucky. Thousands of other didn't and the devastation is really impossible to describe.
I feel bad for your friend Mike, I left my CR behind when we evacuated and wondered if it was the right decision. But in the end, when you evacuate, you have to make decisions. Unfortunately, stuff like car titles, blank checks and photo albums take precedence of motorcycles (I did grab my guitars, but that's because I didn't need a trailer to haul them).
Anyway, when you start sandbagging and realize how the effort is so in vain given the power of the water, you quickly realize that praying is your best use of time. The water goes wherever it pleases.
At this point, I think the water crested and now we can begin the next months and years rebuilding. Cedar Rapids is a great place!
