Well, I didn't ride, my youngest daughter did. I am recuperating from a nasty case of the flu. I figured it would be a good time to check out the track. Kind of a way to get a head start on all you seasoned veterans out there. They had a half price track day to bring in the new year. I'll tell you what, the words "extremely technical" came to mind the moment I walked into the door. Nice place though. A few years ago we went to Farley Iowa for a couple of indoor short track races, so I kind of knew what to expect, but this was my first time at an indoor MX track. The indoor at Farley IA didn't have a heated, glassed in spectator area like Waterman. That is a nice touch. If Waterman was a bit closer to me, I would probably get a membership there.
Saw a nasty crash, and I mean nasty! A kid on a 250F, riding just in front of my son-in-law, flew over the tabletop nearest the spectator area, and somehow ended up vertical, front wheel down on the landing. I think he thought he could ride it out, so he hung on. Well the bike continued it's endo, with him still hanging on for dear life. It face planted him on the down side of the tabletop with the full weight of the bike on top of him. Some how my son-in-law managed to not hit him, but the next guy must not have seen him laying there on the track. So that got real ugly. The guy was laying motionless, and three more bikes launched off the jump, so someone grabbed him by the arm and drug him out of the way. Probably not the best thing to do to an injured person, but it's that or have three more bike land on him.. He did later come to, and I could see him move his arms and legs as the paramedics loaded him up for a ride to the hospital, so hopefully it's nothing serious.
I talked with a crew member there and asked about how the track would be set up for the up coming Vintage race. He said it would remain the same, with the exception of cutting down the whoops section, maybe. Or he said they might not change a thing. So be careful of that tabletop and whoops section in three weeks!
