2 years ago it was Paul Serotsky who persuaded me to overcome prejudice and listen to this composer. Now I am a convert, yet I am amazed at how rarely Arnold's symphonies are performed.
I delayed hearing the 5th till last and I was not disappointed. What a work - tuneful, touching, yet enigmatic and disturbing. I rate it as a truly original and a great work, to be ranked alongside the best of Vaughan Williams, Elgar, Bax and others. Why are performances so rare?
Incidentally Arnold's 5th will be performed by the Birmingham Philharmonic in the Adrian Boult Hall at 7.30pm on Sunday Feb 19th 2006(tickets from Central Library Ticket Shop 0121 236 5622)
