MusicWeb houses the Gerard Hoffnung website which has been very successful in keeping his name alive. The Hoffnungs were friends of Malcolm Arnold and the 5th symphony is biographical containing references to those of his friends who died young (Jack Thurston (clarinettist), Denis Brain, David Paltenghi (ballet dancer and Choreographer) and Gerard. Gerard's widow Annetta accompanied Malcolm to the first performance of this symphony with the Halle.
Arnold uses motifs or ciphers (just like Shostakovich) and GB (German H) represents Gerard Hoffnung and GAB for Gerald and Annetta. But most importantly the beautiful theme of the second movement is a representation of Annetta - a striking lady even now in her 80s but truly beautiful as a young lady.
