Mr. Woolf is absolutely correct in judging the sound to be somewhat murky and boxy. The half-century-old EMS pressings were nightmares to remaster, and I had to throw out the first takes as totally unacceptable. Any attempts at bringing sonority to the performances only exacerbated the flaws in the pressings, which were unfortunately abundant. I sincerely hope that the lack of stunning sonics will not detract from the enjoyment of the pianist himself.
