Posted by Cliff Occomore on September 8, 2006, 3:20 pm Is all this sheer coincidence? Or is there one eminence gris producing the discs and licencing them to one or other of the three companies? Seems all very odd to me, but I'm not really complaining as the music uncovered is all totally delightful! And in answer to your reviewer of the Naxos disc - volume 6 in the series is out this month!

http://www.musicweb-international.com/classrev/2006/Sept06/English_String5_8557752.htm Reading this review led me to wonder if anyone knows if there is any rhyme or reason behind the multitidinous CDs of British Light Music etc that are appearing on Naxos/ASV White Line/Dutton Epoch. Until the recording, the subject of this review, the Naxos series was conducted by David Lloyd-Jones with the RBS on two of his 4 discs. He also conducted a disc of 'English String Music' for ASV with the RBS (WHL 2121). Gavin Sutherland took over the helm on 3 discs of 'British String Minatures' on ASV White Line (WHL 2134/6/9). There appears to be no duplication on any of these 9 (10, see below) discs. Both ASV and Dutton issue compilations of orchestral light music mainly conducted by Sutherland, but again with no duplication. They also seem to be splitting the ongoing series of unknown British concertos with ASV having compilations dealing with oboe/clarinet/bassoon/recorder/cello and trumpet and Dutton one so far devoted again to the clarinet - but, as ever, with no duplications. Then, further ASV have two disc sets celebrating the choreography of 'Madam' and 'Sir Fred'. Dutton has one devoted to the latter - but, yet again and need I say it?, no duplication! Dutton in its British music series has followed ASV's lead by using old transport posters as the art work for the booklet cover etc.
