Posted by John Drexel I have not heard this Naxos recording, but I have high regard for Maria Garzon's sensitive and idiomatic performances on ASV. In fact, I prefer her CD to that of Pettinger--partly a matter of sonics, partly of interpretation; and her inclusion of the Enigma Variations is a big plus. The chronological arrangement of the works on Pettinger's CD gives his disc added interest, especially for those of us who are fascinated in tracing Elgar's development. However, the rather reverberant (i.e., "boomy") Chandos accoustic somewhat spoils the overall effect for me--a problem I find with many Chandos discs. This sound doesn't suit the piano at all, I'm afraid.
