I really enjoyed this review and am eager to hear the Hatto recording (I'll have to check the CD budget). I wonder if you know the Ogden recording from 1972? I can't remember it being witty, exactly, but I did prefer it to the Fingerhut recording someone once made me a cassette transfer of. There are wonderfully lucid performances of the Variations (also both witty & powerful) and the Prélude by Yvonne Léfébure on Solstice, by the way, though I don't know if they are still available.
