Posted by Elizabeth Challenger Yet how often is this work performed? I do not imagine that the BBC would play it these days. It is probably not profound enough for the Proms or perhaps the ‘feel good' about England factor would be an automatic bar. It is very likely well beyond the programming knowledge of Classic FM... For any one interested it is (was) available on Chandos 9524 with the LSO and Richard Hickox conducting.

I was listening to Doreen Carwithen's fine overture Bishop Rock the other day. This wonderful piece - a tone poem really - describes the thoughts generated by consideration of this lighthouse at the very edge of our great nation. Storm and calm are equally well depicted: the music unfolds with great intent, fine orchestration and is full of impressive 'sea' and 'lighthouse' themes. The work closes with strong and uplifting music. Real feel-good stuff!
…but I would rather listen to this work than a dozen overtures by Berlioz, Dvorak and, yes, even Beethoven! I wonder what other listeners think?
