The Robert Shaw Chorale was not an "ad hoc" group, as the reviewer seems to think. Shaw had formed this group of professional singers in the 1940's and continued with it throughout the 1960's. The personnel changed, of course, as it does in any long-lived organization, but the Chorale was one of the first professional choruses in the United States, and still ranks as the one of the best this country has ever had.
